The Role Of Editors, Producers, Music Supervisors and Your Music

Date: Saturday, June 23, 2018
Time:  2:00pm-2:45pm
Location: The Opry City Stage @ 1604 Broadway, New York

One of the most significant roles in connecting music to visual media and ads is that of the editor, the music supervisor and the producer.  Many times, it is the editor of a project – both in pre and post production, who selects the initial music that is used to illuminate the storyline in a game, app, TV show, film or ad. And of course, the music supervisor works as the overall lead in terms of music selection, clearance and research. In this panel, we’ll discuss their roles, how they use music, and how you can connect your music to these key decision makers.

Demystifying Music Rights: Licensing, Public Domain or Fair Use

Presented by NYWIFT
Date: Thursday, May 18, 2017
Time: 6:30-8:30pm

Filmmakers and all types of media creators are constantly faced with the challenge of navigating the vast web of music rights.  What is Music Licensing?  If I only use 2 seconds of the song, am I cleared?  This music is really old, is it Public Domain?  What are my risks if I just use the music? Does “royalty free” mean it’s free?  And what in the world is Fair Use?

Understanding the differences in music rights and being able to clear them properly is essential to minimizing your liability and maximizing the creative possibilities to fit within your budget. In this discussion, NYWIFT & D-Word member Leah Streetman(music supervisor and licensing expert, Triton Creative Group) and NYWIFT board member Maria C. Miles, Esq. (entertainment attorney) give an overview of music rights to help demystify some of these questions.
